The price of coffee in Colombia has risen significantly due to several key factors, below we will tell you in the following summary what the price of coffee depends on. ¿Why is coffee expensive?
1. Price of coffee, the El Niño phenomenon and climate change.
Adverse Weather Conditions: Droughts and extreme rains in key producing countries such as Brazil and Vietnam have affected global coffee supply.
High temperatures have affected coffee production, reducing supply and increasing production costs.
Coffee prices have skyrocketed to levels not seen in almost 50 years, one of the reasons is undoubtedly climate uncertainty in producing countries.
This could lead to global shortages and higher prices for consumers!
2. High Production Costs.
The increase in the prices of fertilizers, crop protection products such as insecticides, fungicides, bio inputs, agricultural machinery and in general implements to develop successful agriculture, has increased costs for coffee growers and the coffee cluster in general.
3. Labor Shortage.
The migration of rural workers to cities escaping law and order problems and violence leads to labor shortages.
There is also a decrease in generational change where many young people seek opportunities in other sectors, which has generated difficulties in harvesting coffee, making the process more expensive.
4. Price of coffee in relation to the High Dollar and Exports.
The exchange rate favors exporters, which drives the domestic price of coffee, since producers prefer to sell abroad where they make better profits.
Also, in the international market, the price of a pound of Colombian coffee registered a new historical record, standing at 369.78 US cents per 100 pounds.
5. International Demand.
Growing demand for specialty coffee and lower supply have pushed prices up.
Additionally, emerging markets, especially in Asia, have shown a significant increase in coffee consumption, putting pressure on existing supply.
6. Logistical and Political Problems.
Instability in transportation and political factors have made distribution difficult, affecting local prices.
All of this has led to the price of coffee in Colombia reaching historic levels.
